September 2021 Committee ReportThe Independent School committee conducted a survey on behalf of VAASL to gain a better understanding of independent school librarians' unique experiences and needs.
The survey revealed that independent school librarians face many of the same challenges as their public school counterparts with regard to funding, lack of role awareness, collection management, and changing spaces and expectations. A notable finding was that independent school librarians report feeling isolated in their school and broader educational community.
They are eager to connect with other librarians and share ideas and resources. The Independent School committee will continue to explore opportunities to forge connections in an effort to reach and support this segment of school librarians.
