History

VAASL was originally founded as the Virginia Educational Media Association in 1975, which was a consolidation of VAECT and VEA-SLD. The membership voted to change the name to Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL) in November 2011. The purpose of VAASL is the improvement of learning in Virginia through effective and efficient use of instructional media and technology. VAASL is a state affiliate of the American Association of School Librarians. Membership provides support, opportunities for professional development, connections to other organizations, and leadership opportunities.

VAASL is an organization of educational professionals and is the recognized voice for excellence in Virginia’s school libraries. We facilitate our mission through the promotion of literacy, information access and evaluation, love of literature, effective use of technology, collaboration in the teaching/learning process, intellectual freedom, professional growth, instructional leadership and lifelong learning.
